Five Nights at Freddy's

⭐⭐⭐

It's a little late for Halloween, but I think it's worth discussing regardless.

Based on the game by the same name, Five Nights at Freddy's is a fun horror that manages to embrace the existing lore of the franchise giving a lot to offer fans of the series, yet avoids taking itself too seriously. (This is after all a film about killer robots dressed as teddy bears.)

I played the original game before seeing this film but to be honest, there is no need to play the games, the film does a pretty good job explaining everything it needs you to know. However, the film was filled with references, easter eggs, and even cameos from popular YouTubers who featured the game on their channels, so you'll get more from the film the more familiar you are with the game.

I must admit I was surprised by the negative reception the film has received so far. Granted, it's by no means a masterpiece, but it delivered on everything I wanted it to. There were plenty of Jumpscares and kills that you'd have come to expect from these animatronics if you played the games.

Never in a million years would I have guessed that the Cupcake would be the thing I was most scared of. That thing was pure evil!

Perhaps people were expecting a more brutal film that relies on shock value and gore like for example the new Saw film. Although personally, I am glad they didn't take that direction as not every horror film needs to make you feel sick as well as scared, and considering that the original games appealed to children despite their dark material I think it's for the best they kept it PG-13.

(shame that doesn't apply over here in the UK as it's been given a 15 rating anyway.)

I enjoyed this film a lot and recommend it to anyone who wants a spooky film that won't traumatise them. Hope we get to see a sequel one day.

Most memorable quote: "How's the pay?" "Not Great but... the hours are worse."

- That's one way to offer someone a job 🤣
