Diving into Final Fantasy VII Remake for the first time I didn't really know what to expect. I imagined a dark gritty action RPG set in a dystopian future. Instead, what I got was an unexpectedly light-hearted game that revels in its silliness. Rebirth dials everything up to eleven. A massive open world, action-packed yet tactical combat and an adventure that's epic in scale while being unapologetically ridiculous.
You play as Cloud alongside his fellow party members, continuing their journey to save the world and Defeat Sephiroth. contrary to its predecessor, Rebirth's world bursts with colour. Mountains and grasslands wait to be explored and their secrets uncovered. In between battling gargantuan monsters, you'll be exploring theme parks, entering card game tournaments and even going on beach days. These divertissements may seem unnecessary, but they are a highlight of the game, providing a memorable experience unlike any I've played before.
I took issue with Remakes 30 hour runtime as I felt too much content was designed solely to bloat out its length. Sadly this issue remains. I've been playing for over 50 hours and see no end in sight. As exciting as the open world is, many of its objectives feel pointless. you'll go through all the effort of getting somewhere only for it to require nothing more than a few button presses before checking it off your list.
Despite its needlessly oversized length, Rebirth is a blast to play. Each character has unique abilities to master. throughout its run, you'll recruit new companions and bond with your party, discovering more about their past. I loved the cast of characters and was always eager to learn more about them. At its best, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the most exciting and unique games on PlayStation and now it's been announced for PC, there's no excuse not to give it a go.
